Hardscaping & Masonry in Bucks County, PA

A hardscape in this county is judged by how it looks in its tenth winter, not its first summer. Southeastern Pennsylvania does not freeze once and stay frozen; it freezes and thaws repeatedly from December through March, and every cycle is an opportunity for water trapped beneath a surface to lift it.

Underneath most of Bucks County is silt loam sitting on clay, shale or rock. Clay holds water rather than shedding it, so a base that would be adequate on sandy ground is not adequate here. Anything with a footing that must stay still through winter has to be founded below the frost line, which runs to around three feet locally. That is why steps and seat walls cost more per square foot than an open terrace, and why base depth matters more than the paver you choose.

Concrete Pavers

A flexible field rather than one rigid slab, so it moves with the ground instead of cracking. Individual units lift and relay, which makes repairs invisible. The most practical choice for most patios, walkways and drives.

Bluestone And Natural Stone

The regional material, and the right one on a fieldstone farmhouse. Dry-laid stone flexes with the ground, while wet-laid stone gives tighter joints but depends entirely on the slab and drainage beneath it.

Brick And Stone Veneer

Used where a hardscape has to meet existing brick or stonework on the house, and for pillars, facing and feature walls where the structure is block but the face needs to read as masonry.

Poured Concrete

Lowest up-front cost and fastest across a large open area. Control joints tell it where to crack rather than stopping it cracking, and repairs always show, so we use it where it genuinely suits the job.

Segmental Block

The workhorse for structural retaining. Above a modest height it ties back into the slope with geogrid, which is what lets block walls carry real load safely on a graded site.

Fieldstone And Boulder

Dry-laid fieldstone for garden and frontage walls on period properties, and set boulder work where a large grade change needs stone at a scale that matches the problem.

The surface material is rarely the largest line on a hardscape. Five site factors usually are. Access, meaning whether a machine reaches the work area or every ton of aggregate goes through a side gate by hand. Grade, because sloped sites need retaining, steps, or both, and steps are the most labour-intensive element in any hardscape. Base depth, because clay subgrade needs more excavation and more stone than sandy subgrade. Drainage, because water has to have somewhere to go. And detail, because curves, banding, inlays, seat walls, lighting and edge restraint are where the hours accumulate.

Two patios of identical size on properties a mile apart can differ widely on those five points alone, which is why we walk a site before quoting rather than pricing by the square foot over the phone.

How deep does the base need to be?

It depends on the subgrade and the load. Clay subgrade needs more excavation and more compacted aggregate than sandy ground, and a driveway needs considerably more than a patio. We determine it on site rather than applying one number everywhere.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Commonly at four feet measured from the bottom of the footing, and lower where there is a surcharge above the wall such as a drive, pool or steep slope. Thresholds vary by township, so confirm with yours early because it changes both the drawings and the schedule.

Will my patio crack or settle?

A paver or dry-laid stone field is a flexible system, so it moves with the ground rather than cracking, and individual units can be lifted and relaid. Poured concrete is rigid and will crack at its control joints eventually.

When is the best time of year to build?

Hardscape can be built through most of the year here, stopping only for frozen ground and saturated conditions. Autumn and early winter are often the least congested time to schedule, and spring books up first.

Can you match existing stone on my house?

Usually. On older Bucks County properties we work with salvaged and reclaimed stone where we can, because material that has weathered for two centuries cannot be matched by anything bought new.
